Edna Grace Hill of Sunnyvale, CA passed away on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at Palm Villas Assisted Living, Campbell, CA. She was born November 8, 1928, in Gray Station, PA, a daughter of the late Charles Wilbert Trimble and Lelia M (Gray) Trimble and was their last surviving child. Edna attended and graduated from the Derry High School and was an outstanding student. She wanted to attend Nursing School but due to her family finances she was unable to pursue this career. She started working part time at the age of 16 at the Torrance State Hospital to help support her family. She was part of the Greatest Generation who grew up in the depression, served in World War II, sacrificed themselves for their children and who had a work ethic unparalleled to today's generations.
Edna married Stewart M. Hill Jr. in November 1949 who was right out of the Navy having served in the Pacific Theatre and witnessed nuclear test bombings. The couple moved to Williamsport, PA where her husband attended trade school. They welcomed their first daughter and moved to Binghamton NY where Stewart went to work for Link Aviation and Edna worked for Canny Trucking. Two more daughters and a son were added to the family and Edna went to work for a small field office of Hewlett-Packard.
Her husband was offered a transfer to Sunnyvale, CA with Link Aviation and they moved to California in 1967. Edna also stayed with Hewlett-Packard but went to work at their corporate headquarters at Page Mill Road in Palo Alto, CA and worked for Dave Packard, one of the founders. She had an illustrious career at Hewlett-Packard and worked at many different jobs and divisions until she retired in 1995.
In 1985 Edna’s world was turned upside down when her husband Stewart passed away from skin cancer and she was left a widow at 56. She made a comment at her husband’s funeral that all the good times were over, fortunately this was not true and her life took on a new direction. She started a second career working at Macy’s part time, she became a world traveler with her sister Doris Masker and she enjoyed all those happy times with her four children; birthdays, holidays, graduations, marriages and births of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Edna finally retired from Macy’s in 2013 at the age of 85 and celebrated a fabulous 90th birthday with her extended family. She was active her whole life and was appreciated by her family and all who came in contact with her and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her daughters Jeanne Hill-Jurik of Divide, CO, Nena Grilli of San Jose, CA, Ginny Hardenbrook of Corvallis, OR and her son Stewart III of Cody, WY, grandchildren Jennifer, Stewart G., Shasta, Holly, Brian and Stewart IV and five great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Pennsylvania at a later date.
