James G. Cushion

James G. Cushion, of Blairsville, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on January 17, 2025, at the age of 87.  He was born on November 7, 1937, in Brewton, Alabama, to James D. & Ruby Lee (Hodges) Cushion.  

In his early years, Jim proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. It was during this time in Washington, D.C., where he began his storybook romance with the love of his life, Ramona. The couple married on November 23, 1957, and shared 62 wonderful years together before her passing in 2019.

Jim was a man of many talents and trades. Over the years, he was a construction worker, coal miner, truck driver, businessman, craftsman, accomplished musician, and aspiring author. Known for his strong work ethic and willingness to help anyone in need, Jim left a lasting impression on all who crossed his path. He was deeply devoted to his family and took his role seriously.  He was truly a party waiting to happen.

Jim is survived by his children: Sandra (Cushion) Dettore (her husband, Daniel, in Blairsville, PA) and James Randall Cushion (his wife, Barbara, in Indiana, PA); his grandchildren: Julia (Dettore) Cawthra (her husband, William, in Mt. Pleasant, SC), Alaina Dettore (in Pittsburgh, PA), and Jason Cushion (in Latrobe, PA); as well as his great-grandchildren: Annabelle and Eliza Cawthra (in Mt. Pleasant, SC) and sister, Sylvia Jean.  Jim was preceded in death by his parents; sister Mary Cicero; and the love of his life, Ramona.  

May Jim’s memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspire others to live with the same love and generosity he so freely shared.  

The family will receive friends at the Ferguson Funeral Home & Monument Company, 25 W. Market St. Blairsville, PA 15717 on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 from 11-1 PM.  A funeral service will be held at 1 PM with Bill Hebenthal officiating.  Blairsville Military Honor Guard will conduct military services in the funeral home following the funeral service.

Private interment will be held in the Blairsville Cemetery, Blairsville, Pennsylvania.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jim’s name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Indiana County Humane Society, 191 Airport Road, Indiana, PA 15701.
